Strengthening Food Quality & Consumer Protection

The Ministry of National Food Security & Research held a consultative meeting with relevant government institutions, technical bodies, and industry representatives to strengthen the quality assessment of essential food commodities. The meeting reviewed the quality of key food commodities, particularly ghee, edible oils and milk, following the directions of the National Price Monitoring Committee (NPMC).

Of the 491 samples tested, 176 were reported as non-conforming, with issues related to Vitamin A fortification, trans fats, free fatty acids, milk fat, and milk protein.

Industry representatives raised concerns regarding sampling procedures, sample size, product categorization, traceability, and application of relevant standards. PCSIR maintained that laboratory testing was conducted using standardized methods and applicable Pakistan Standards.

Stakeholders emphasized the development of a transparent, scientifically robust, and standardized national framework for regular food-quality assessment, with stronger coordination among federal and provincial authorities, technical institutions, and industry stakeholders.

The initiative aims to strengthen quality monitoring, regulatory coordination, and compliance with national food standards to better safeguard food quality and consumer interests.
