MNFSR Reviews GM Soybean & Canola Import Mechanism
A meeting was held at the Ministry of National Food Security & Research (MNFSR) under the chairmanship of the Federal Minister to review the extension in the current import conditions for GM Soybean and GM Canola. The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Ministry, the Department of Plant Protection (DPP), the Director (NIGAB), technical experts, and representatives of the Pakistan Solvent Extractors Association (APSEA).
The forum reviewed the existing import mechanism for GM Soybean (from the USA and Brazil) and GM Canola (from Canada), along with the status of the ongoing Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) process. It was noted that while temporary extensions had been granted from time to time, completion of the PRA remains the only sustainable and long-term solution to streamline imports in accordance with regulatory requirements.
The following key decisions were taken:
The Director General, Department of Plant Protection (DPP), shall complete the necessary Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) with the concerned exporter.
The current import conditions for GM Soybean and GM Canola have been extended for a further period of three months, ensuring continuity of trade and preventing market disruption during the PRA completion process.
A committee will be constituted, including representation from APSEA, to review and monitor the PRA process to ensure its timely completion.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to establishing a predictable, science-based, and transparent regulatory framework that ensures plant health safeguards while facilitating legitimate trade.
