Rabi experiments on chickpea, lentil and rapeseed.

Chickpea and lentil trials contributed by AARI, Faisalabad, NIFA, Peshawar and Pulses Program, NARC are at initial stage of pod formation while some entries are at later stage of flower completion.

All the rapeseed / mustard experiments were maintained well. Junceae Preliminary yield trial has been harvested and data have been recorded on different parameters like plant height, branches plant -1 , grains pod -1 and pods plant -1 . Chinese rapeseed trial and NUYT on Brassica napes are at flowering / pod formation stage. Crop has been sprayed with Lambda cyhelotherin and Confidor insecticides for the control of army worm and aphids.

Fusarium wilt disease was noted in some of the entries of NIFA and AARI, Faisalabad Trials. Weeding was done on need basis

International / National / Regional / Local wheat trials.

The condition of all the international, national and local wheat trials and nurseries is good. The crop has received enough rain during the month under report. Crop is at tillering stage and no attack of rust or any other disease has been observed.

The regional wheat and barley trials are in excellent condition. Heading has been started in some entries.

Quality seed production and farm income generation.

The condition of chickpea, wheat, Oat / barley and sugar beet sown for quality seed production and income generation is satisfactory.

Manual as well as mechanical weeding was done in sugar beet crop.

In wheat crop Buctril Super weedicide has been sprayed to control the weeds.

Sunflower hybrid seed production

Sunflower is planted on 08 acres for hybrid seed production, the seed was provided by the Oilseed program NARC, Islamabad

Tube well at central pivot site was used for irrigation before sowing of crop as canal is closed for de-siltation.

Crop production under Centre Pivot Irrigation System machine.

The condition of rapeseed variety (Takwara), sown for quality seed production under CPIS at AZRI farm, is satisfactory. Crop is at pod formation stage. Wheat crop sown on raised bed under CPIS is growing well.

The attack of aphid was controlled through Confidor insecticide. Various types of weeds were eradicated manually from both crops.

Maintenance of biogas digester at farmer field.

The biogas digester plant is in working condition; however the production of gas is reducing due to low temperature and cloudy weather. These days the gas produce is being utilized only for domestic purpose.

Economic analysis has been carried out during the month.

Maintenance of orchard under Alternate source of energy (Solar).

•  Plants of mango, guava, orange and lemon planted under drip irrigation system operated by alternate source of energy (Solar system) are growing well.

•  Spinach, turnip and fenugreek sown in orchard of guava and being irrigated through solar pump, are in good condition.

Farm yard manure, weeding and irrigation have been applied on required basis.

Training Imparted.

A group of B. Sc (Hons) students Faculty of Agriculture, Gomal University along with their professors visited the AZRI farm and witnessed plant breeding, agronomic and horticultural crops trials. CPIS and Solar system were demonstrated for pumping of irrigation water to crop and fruit plants.

Students were briefed about trials conducted on different aspects by concerned scientists.

The activities performed under the MoU signed between PARC and Gomal University, DIKhan.

AZRI's scientists conducted oral examination and evaluated thesis of students of Faculty of Agriculture, Gomal University, DIKhan. Papers of B. Sc (Hons) students were also marked.

The activities performed are according to MoU signed between PARC and Gomal University.

Recording Agro-meteorological data.

Agro-meteorological data were recorded from AZRI observatory unit. Minimum temperature (02 0 C) was recorded on 07-02-2014 and cold winds @ 06 km / hour blown on 07-02-2014. Total rainfall 36 mm was received during the month under report.

Data were distributed among different organizations for information and utilization.

Meeting

•  Meeting with vegetable seed importer to discuss matters pertaining to import of vegetable seed. Director General FSC&RD, chaired the meeting on 4 th February, 2014 at FSC&RD (Hqrs.) Islamabad.

•  Meeting with hybrid rice seed importers regarding issues related to import was held on 8 th February, 2014 at Lahore.

•  Convened the meeting of Regional Directors of FSC&RD at Islamabad on 18 th February, 2014 regarding availability of certified cotton seed.

Meeting on issues related to posting/transfer of employees of wound up PODB to Ministry of National Food Security and research

Meeting was held on 6-2-2014 under the chairmanship of Additional Secretary, Establishment Division. It was decided that all employees of wound up PODB presently posted in various Ministries/Divisions / Departments will be transferred to Ministry of National Food Security and Research for further posting in restored PODB.

Meeting with Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Government of Sindh regarding oilpalm plantation in coastal belt of Sindh under technical and financial cooperation of Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA), Malaysia

 

The Managing Director, PODB and the Joint Secretary (IC/P), NFS&R held meeting with ACS (Dev), Government of Sindh on 10-02-2014. Detail discussions were held on the proposal of large scale oilplam Plantation through technical and financial cooperation of FELDA. Planning and Development Department, Sindh will initiate a summary for the Chief Minister, Sindh for principal agreement on the proposal.

Briefing to the Minister on Admitted starred/unstarred Senate Question No. 110 moved by the Senator Syeda Sughra Imam.

  

Federal Minister on Defense and Production presented reply of the above said question on behalf of Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research in 102 nd Session of the Senate held on 25-02-2014.

The Managing Director, PODB briefed the Federal Minister and apprised about the steps taken to reduce dependence on imports of plam oil through various interventions on oilpalm plantation by PODB in coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan.

Animal Quarantine Department matters related to import / export of livestock products, registration of slaughterhouses and processing units and harmonization of health certificate were dealt during the reported month.

To Issue NOC and provide information for Import of Exotic Semen/Dairy Heifers

Examined, processed and issued two NOC's to M/S Everfresh Dairy Farm, Lahore & M/S Maxium International, Pvt Ltd, Sheikupura, for the import of 17,430 doses of exotic bovine semen.

Information prepared and provided to M/S Raza Zafar Dairy Farm, Islamabad, M/S GreenTek International, Lahore, M/S Schiwo Pakistan, Multan and M/S International Traders, Lahore for the import of bovine semen into the country.

 

 

To Issue NOC and provide information for Import of Dairy Heifers

Examined, processed and issued one NOC's to M/S Matrix Dairy Farm, Hafizabad, for the import of 260 Hostien Freezia & Jersy Cow from Australia.

Information prepared and provided to M/S Matrix Dairy Farm, Hafizabad & M/S Nashat Dairy Farm, and Lahore for the import of dairy heifers into the country from Australia.

Examined and supplied information to M/S Altaf & Co, Lahore & M/S Saphire Dairies Pvt Ltd, Lahore for the import of Calf Milk Replacer (CMR) in to the country.

Examined, processed and issued one certificates to M/S Maxium International Pvt. Ltd., Sheikupura, for the import of 24,000 Kg of Cattle Feed Premix (CFP).

Information prepared and provided to M/S Biolive Pakistan, Burewals , M/S Nishat Dairy Pv.t Ltd., Lahore & M/S Ghazi Brothers, karachi for the import of CFP into the country.

Briefs on Livestock Status in country were prepared for Brazil, Saudi Arabia and UAE for meetings and submitted to IC Section, M/O NFS&R during the reporting month.

 

Brief was prepared about status of registered Slaughter House in the country for the Secretary, M/O NFS&R.

Attended the Inter-Ministerial Meeting for the 9th Session of Pak-Afghanistan Joint Economic Commission on 20-02-2014 at Finance Division.

 

Attended the Inter-Ministerial Meeting for 2nd Joint Review Committee on Pakistan-Malaysia Closer Economic Partnership Agreement on 20-02-2014 at M/O Commerce .

Submitted livestock Epidemiological report for the period of July – Dec. 2013 in respect of Pakistan to OIE

Processed case regarding revised estimates for 2013-14 and budget estimates for 2014 -15 in respect of disbursement of foreign project aid (grant, loans and supplier's credits)

Questionnaire was filled regarding Agreement Between the Government of the Republic of the Serbia and Government of Pakistan on Cooperation in the Veterinary Field

Provided views/comments/proposals for cooperation between Pakistan and Netherlands, Bahrain, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and Russia
