Variety development process

AZRI has contributed one promising line of wheat and one line of rapeseed for testing in NUYT-2013-14.

Testing of promising line for two years in National Uniform Yield Trials is pre-requisite for variety registration.

Orchard maintenance under Alternate source of energy (Solar).

•  All the plants of mango, guava, orange and lemon planted under drip irrigation system, pumped with alternate source of energy (Solar) are growing well.

•  The winter vegetables i.e. spinach, garlic, turnip, fenugreek and reddish are growing well in orchard of guava and applied irrigation from solar pump.

•  Wheat crop has been sown on raised beds in citrus orchard.

•  Plants have been covered properly for protecting from cold injury.

•  Farm yard manure added and weeding on required basis.

 

•  The germination of wheat crop sown on raised beds in citrus orchard is excellent.

•  Cultivation of Rapeseed crop under Artesian well project.

 

 

•  Establishment of fisheries activity under artesian wells.

 

•  Wheat crop demonstration plots under Artesian well project.

•  The condition of rape seed variety “Takwara” planted under the artesian well at Daraban is satisfactory.

 

•  The excavation of fish pond has been completed and the plastic lining to avoid seepage is under progress. Water will be allowed in pond within few days.

 

•  The germination of wheat demonstration plot planted at two locations under the artesian well is satisfactory.

The crop has not yet entered in reproductive phase.

Maintenance of biogas digester at farmer field.

The biogas digester plant is in working condition but the volume of gas is reducing day by day due to low temperature and cloudy weather. Data has been recorded for input / output on daily basis regularly.

These days the gas produced is being utilized only for domestic purpose.

Crop production under Centre Pivot Irrigation System machine.

•  Rapeseed “Takwara” variety sown under CPIS at AZRI farm for quality seed production is well.

 

•  Wheat has sown on raised bed under CPIS for quality seed production.

Weeding and irrigation were done during the month on required basis.

.

Quality seed production and farm income generation.

Chickpea crop planted on an area of 18 acres, wheat (40 acres), Oat / barley (05 acres) and sugar beet (07 acres) for quality seed production and income generation is growing well.

Necessary cultural practices were applied on requirement basis.

Rabi experiments on chickpea, lentil and rapeseed.

•  Seven different trails of chickpea & lentil contributed by AARI, Faisalabad, NIFA, Peshawar and NUYT, NARC are growing well.

Chickpea Progeny block sown for generation advancement and further selection is also in excellent growth condition.

Trials on rapeseed /mustard are growing well. Flowering has been started in almost all entries however a few entries have been setting pods.

Irrigation was applied during the month. No insect/disease attack has been observed on the crop.

Seed multiplication of Sunflower Restorers.

Sun flower restorer lines sown on an area of one (1) acre have been harvested.

Threshing of the material is under process.

Regional trials for testing wider adoptability.

Four different trials including Regional yield trials, seed rate & NPK on the wheat line (E-10) and barley planted at institute are growing well. Regional trials on wheat and barley sent to BARS, Kohat, ARS, Serai Naurang and NIFA, Peshawar for testing AZRI's line under different climatic conditions of Khyber Pakhtoon Khawa are also growing well.

Irrigation was applied as per requirement.

Disseminations of Research Results / new techniques.

Farmers' questions about improved cropping techniques / disease control on crop and fruit plants were answered on live weekly transmission programme “ Wasdian Jhokan ” by Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, DIKhan.

Adoption of sustainable cropping pattern along with improved crop production packages and improved varieties was also emphasized.

Training Imparted.

•  A group of students of B. Sc (Hons), Faculty of agriculture, Gomal University, DIKhan were given training on Statistical analysis package (MSTATC).

•  Lecture was given to the technical experts from University of Peshawar along-with under training service providers at AZRI farm.

Statistical analysis is necessary in agricultural research to find out significance of treatments used in experiment.

The activities performed under the MoU signed between PARC and Gomal University, DIKhan.

Marked four question papers and conducted practical examinations of 06 different subjects of B.Sc (Hons).

The activities performed are according to the plan of work submitted regarding the MoU signed between PARC and Gomal University.

Recording Agro-meteorological data.

Agro-meteorological data were recorded at the observatory unit of AZRI, D.I.Khan. Minimum temperature (2 0 C) was recorded on 29-12-2013 and only 01mm rainfall was received during the month; Cold wind @ 5 km / hr blown on 30 th December that might have negative effect on crop growth particularly gram and rapeseed.

Data was distributed among other organization for information and utilization.

Contract Signed for a training project

FDB received financial assistance for a project entitled “Capacity building through skill development across supply chain in the fisheries sector” from GIZ. 1000 persons will be trained in different trades of Fisheries and Aquaculture for development of the Sector and a training center will be established to provide trainings in Seafood processing.

 

2.

Closing of a Fish Sale Point

Fisheries Development Board in association with PATCO (NARC) was opened a fish sale point to sell quality fish produced at Fisheries Development Board's own farms and farms of associated fish farmers under guidance of Fisheries Development Board. After successful promotion and introduction of tilapia to consumers the sale point was closed on 4 th of December2013, so the private sector could continue the activity.

Harvesting of Tilapia raised at FDB demo fish pond at Alipur chatha.

Fisheries Development Board is running a growth trial of Tilapia nilotica at two acre fish pond at Alipur Chatha to demonstrate intensive fish farming, partial harvesting was made during December, 2013.

Harvesting of Tilapia at Mangla Site.

Fisheries Development Board completed their harvesting of Tilapia nilotica in 36 fish cages at Mangla Dam Site.

 

6.

An open day at Hamalyia Fish Hatchery, near Lahore.

Fisheries Development Board jointly organized an open day for fish farmers to raise awareness of tilapia farming in Pakistan. the event was held at Hamalyia fish hatchery near Lahore on 8 th December, 2013.

An open day at Nabeel Fish Farm near Patoki

Fisheries Development Board jointly organized an open day for fish farmers to raise awareness of tilapia farming in Pakistan. the event was held at Nabeel Fish Farm near Potoki on 15 th December, 2013.

Examined, processed and issued 5 NOC’s to various firms for the import of 20550 Doses of exotic bovine semen.

One NOC’s were issued for the import of 407 exotic dairy heifers into the country.

Continued the implementation of ECC decision on “Ban on Commercial Export of Live Animals with effect from 1-10-2013”.

1. Prepared brief on dairy production in Pakistan and import /export of milk powder for Minister, M/O National Food & Security.

2. Submitted report to OIE regarding Pakistan Rinderpest freedom status.

Attended three meetings regarding Pak-China FTA and provided input on livestock related matters.

International Coordination in Livestock Sector

1. Processed the case of visit of Saudi Delegation to study health and veterinary conditions of livestock and poultry farms in Pakistan. The Saudi Technical Delegation is visiting Pakistan (29th December 2013 to 13th January 2014).

2. Followed up the case for lifting of ban on export of chicken and chicken products from Pakistan to UAE.

3. Provided views/comments/proposals for cooperation between Pakistan and Yemen, Argentina Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

4. Evaluation of proposal for cooperation between Pakistan and Iran & Turkey are under process.
