Orchard maintenance under Alternate source of energy (Solar).

The condition of all the plants of mango, guava, orange and lemon planted under drip irrigation system, pumped with Alternate source of energy (Solar), is satisfactory. Weeding was also done around each plant and orchard was irrigated on requirement basis.

Growth of all plants relatively slower due to change in climatic condition.

Cultivation of Rapeseed crop under Artesian well project.

 

Establishment of fisheries activity under artesian wells.

Rape seed variety “Takwara” was sown on two locations under the artesian well during the end of this month.

Digging of pond for fish rearing and installation of necessary gauging equipments on each site was completed during the month.

Data will be presented after harvest.

 

Economic condition of society will be improved with intervention.

Maintenance of biogas digester at farmer field.

The biogas digester is in working condition and the gas produced was used for running diesel engine for irrigation and household on continuous basis. Data has been recorded for intake / output on daily basis.

Gas production is under way on sustainable basis.

 

Biogas digester is gaining popularity in the area.

Establishment of orchard and beatification of AZRI farm.

Five hundred (500) different plants including ornamental and fruit plants were planted in road side channels and in surrounding area of office building at AZRI, Farm.

Date palm plants have been transplanted from AZRI mother block, while ornamental plants were purchased.

Crop production under Centre Pivot Irrigation System machine.

Rapeseed “Takwara” variety was sown under CPIS for quality seed production on an area of four (04) kanals. Preparation of land is under way for sowing of wheat, oat and vegetable under CPIS.

Effect of CPIS irrigation on growth of rabi crop will be studied.

Quality seed production and farm income generation.

•  Mixed fodder crops including barseem, rapeseed and oat were sown on an area of eight acres. Rapeseed + barley have been sown on an area of six acres for income generation.

•  Twelve acres chickpea was sown for quality seed production.

•  Planted sugar beet on an area of five (5) acres for income generation.

•  Sowing of wheat for seed multiplication is continued on an area of thirty (30) acres.

Quality seed will be available for farmers and farm income will be increased.

Kharif experiments on different crops.

Six experiments including national uniform yield trial on mungbean, sesame, maize (White & Yellow), millet and a maize varietal trial were harvested and threshed.

Data on yield and yield contributing parameters were recorded accordingly.

Rabi experiments on chickpea, lentil and rapeseed.

Seven different trials on chickpea and lentil including micro yield trial, adaptation trials and NUYT were planted.

 

Chickpea Progeny block has been sown on 30-10-2013 for generation advancement and further selection.

Five different trials on rapeseed / mustard have been planted during the month.

Some of these trials are conducted as coordination activity among AZRI and other research organizations.

All the entries included in the trials germinated well. Necessary measures for control of grass hopper and cut worm were adopted.

Testing of fodder germplasm under agro-climatic conditions of the area.

Data on 50% heading and plant height were completed in fodder germ plasm (millet and sorghum) during the month.

Irrigation was applied on required basis.

Seed multiplication of Sunflower Restorers.

Sunflower restorer sown on an area of one (1) acre in collaboration with oilseed coordinated programme, PARC was maintained for quality seed production and purification of restorer.

Weeding & hoeing was done, irrigation and fertilizer were applied during the month. Roughing was done to remove the off type plants.

Mungbean seed increase.

Mungbean promising line of AZRI “DM-4” sown on an area of two acres for seed increase was harvested and threshed.

The seed produced have been bulked for next year sowing.

Regional trials for testing wider adoptability.

Regional trials on wheat and barley were sent to four research stations in Khyber Pakhtoon Khawa for testing institute line's wider adoptability under different climatic conditions.

Trials consisted for six wheat varieties/promising lines and five barley varieties/lines.

Disseminations of Research Results / new techniques.

•  Delivered lectures on modern techniques of farming and answered live questions of farmers through weekly transmission programme “Wasdian Jhokan ” by Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, DIKhan.

•  Demonstrated suckers detachment and planting techniques for cultivation of date palm to interested growers of the area.

Emphasized on adoption of sustainable cropping pattern.

Training Imparted.

Internee / students of Faculty of Agriculture, Gomal University are under training in field research operations/ breeding techniques at AZRI for completion of their studies in different fields of agriculture.

Attended “ Zarkhaz Watan Expo” a festival arranged jointly by Faculty of Agriculture & a TV channel and shared research based knowledge/scientific techniques for improvement of agriculture production with researchers/scientists/ students and farmers participating in the event at Gomal University, DIKhan.

Internship period is three month field training as per University's curriculum.

 

 

 

The activity was performed under the MoU signed between PARC and Gomal University, DIKhan.

Recording Agro-meteorological data.

Agro-meteorological data were recorded at the observatory unit of AZRI, D.I.Khan. The fastest windblown at a speed of 77 km/day on 05-10-2013. While the maximum temperature was recorded 37 0 C on 08-10-2013 and only 5mm the rainfall was recorded during the month.

Data distribution among other organization for information and utilization is a permanent activity.

Edible oil statistics received and compiled for reference purposes.

Availability of sunflower and canola seed for Rabi Season

Coordinated with ICI, Pakistan regarding availability of sunflower/canola hybrid seed for sowing in Rabi season.

Availability of olive saplings for plantation

MD, PODB held meeting with Director, Barani Agriculture Research Institute ( BARI ), Chakwal and discussed availability of olive sapling and prospects of olive plantation in ICT and adjoining areas

Follow up of the minutes of the Meeting with State Life Insurance Corporation of Pakistan held on 13-9-2013.

Draft letter from Secretary, NFS&R to Finance Division sent to NFS&R for further necessary action

NFS&R was requested to get clarification from Law Division regarding jurisdiction of PODB's activities and the term “federal areas only” written in the notification of restored PODB.

During the period under report, 78 (No.) seed samples of wheat crop were tested at Central Seed Testing Laboratory, Islamabad . All seed samples found within prescribed standards.

During the period under report 121 seed samples of different crops were tested at the Central Seed Testing Laboratory, Islamabad . All seed samples were found within the prescribed standards.

During the period under report 51 sample of wheat seed was tested for detection of fungal diseases at Seed Health Laboratory, Islamabad . 4 seed samples were found below the prescribed standards .
